Keeping Your Apartment Health Hazard Free

Thursday, January 17, 2008

Avoiding health hazards is an important aspect of apartment safety. Mold can kill as quickly as a fire and are much more difficult to notice than other hazards. There are some helpful tips to keep your apartment free of health hazards that can harm you, your family and your friends.

Mold- Mold can be a deadly hazard. Mold spores can cause serious, sometimes fatal illnesses in children and adults alike. Mold grows in warm, moist areas like bathrooms and kitchens. It is also prevalent in areas in the south where these conditions are often met outdoors. Watch for dark spots in the grout between tiles in the kitchen and bathroom; these may be mold and should be cleaned as soon as they are seen. The ceiling in bathrooms can also be a playground for mold. Airing out your bathroom after showers and baths is a good way to keep down the chance that mold will get a foot hold in the room.

Use a bleach and water mixture to clean mold from floors, walls and ceilings. Wear rubber gloves to protect yourself from the mold and the bleach, as well. Knowing if you’re allergic to mold will help you avoid serious allergic reactions, as well.

If mold or mildew is present on a fabric covered item like clothing or furniture, get rid of the item. While it can be cleaned, it is very difficult to do. Getting rid of the item is usually the best and safest bet.

Air, light and regular cleaning are great deterrents for mold growth. Open windows in good weather to let in light and air, use the vent in the bathroom and clean up standing water as soon as possible.

Where to Find Your First Apartment

Wednesday, January 16, 2008

While finding your first apartment can be an exciting, even liberating, experience. There are a few things to take into consideration before jumping into a binding contract, though.

One of the most important aspects of renting an apartment is the area you’ll be living in. Doing a little homework before hand can mean the difference between living in an area you love and one that you hate. Believe it or not, the area you live in will have a big influence on your enjoyment of your newfound freedom.

Check out the local amenities. This includes such mundane things as the number of grocery stores in the area and how far from the apartment they are. Gyms, schools, bus lines and employment opportunities should also be taken into account.

If you’re getting an apartment while in college or attending a university, the proximity of the school to your apartment will be a big deal. Getting to class easily, on time, will be one of the big considerations you’ll need to make. With a little looking you can find a lot of apartments located nearby school campuses. Choosing an apartment close to your school will have a lot of benefits and will make the experience better.

The same consideration should be made if you’re moving for a job. Making sure you live nearby will drastically cut down on your commute, even if you’re taking public transportation to and from work.

Knowing the type of neighborhood your apartment is located in will help you make a better choice as far as your living accommodations are concerned. Doing your homework before deciding on an apartment will let you find a great place to live in an area that you love.

Decorating Your Bedroom

Tuesday, January 15, 2008

If you share your apartment with roommates, decorating can be problematic. Rarely will your roommates share your tastes enough to allow a single decorating theme through the entire apartment. In cases like this, you and your roommate should choose a neutral theme for the communal rooms in the apartment, but you can go nuts in your bedroom. This is your sanctuary in an apartment shared with roommates; a living space that is completely yours to do with as you will. You can decorate it in any way you want and not have to worry about arguing with your roommate about how it looks.

Drapes/Window Treatments- One of the best ways to add your personal touch to your bedroom is by changing the window treatments. Most apartments come with bland white blinds that express no particular style. Take them down, but make sure you save them; you’ll have to put them back when you move out. Choose a window treatment that reflects your tastes, from lacey translucent curtains to heavy brocade, you’ll find an endless variety of ways to change your windows. Custom curtain rods can lend your room an air of refinement or natural beauty, as well.

Art- Posters are fine, but framed art is better. This doesn’t mean you have to have pictures of country cottages on the walls, unless that’s your thing. You’ll find any kind of art that you can think of to reflect any tastes or personality. Getting these prints matted and framed adds a tremendous amount to the works and they look great on the wall.

Sculpture- This doesn’t have to be classical statues. You’ll find a wide variety of metal, wood and stone sculpture that can be placed in corners or along the wall to provide even more beauty.

Don’t Forget About Safety

Wednesday, January 09, 2008

Getting into your apartment is an exciting prospect. The new space feels full of promise and excitement, but don’t forget a few helpful tips to stay safe in your new place. Apartment safety can sometimes be overlooked in the moving rush and the excitement of a new place; make sure you don’t forget this important aspect of apartment living.

There are a lot of things that can be done to make apartment living safer. From changing the locks on the doors to not putting your full name on the mail box, but one of the most important things to remember about apartment safety is renter’s insurance.

The most important thing you’ll ever do to make yourself and your stuff safe is to get a renter’s insurance policy. Without renter’s insurance, who will replace your possessions if they’re lost, damaged or stolen?

Many renters assume that the rental property’s insurance will protect their things. Wrong. The apartment complex’s insurance covers the building and the interior parts like elevators and stairs; it doesn’t do a thing about your personal belongings. If there’s a fire, earthquake or other natural disaster and you don’t have a renter’s insurance policy, you’re on your own as far as replacing your items goes.

Another thing that renter’s insurance does for you is to protect your assets in case someone comes to harm in your apartment. If you have friends over and they’re hurt inside your apartment, their medical bills are legally your responsibility. If someone sues your over their injuries that happened in your apartment, that lawsuit is your responsibility. Renter’s insurance is designed to cover this possibility as well.

Saving Money in Your First Apartment

Monday, January 07, 2008

While getting your first apartment can be exciting, the reality of it can be a little frightening, as well. With the freedom of having your own place comes the responsibility of paying bills. It’s easy to caught up in the excitement and forget about things like paying the bills. On top of that, you’re sure to continually find new things that you absolutely have to have for your apartment and each one of these requires money, as well. Here are a few useful tips to help you save money while in your first apartment.

Utilities:

Saving money on utilities is a practical way of reducing your cost of living. While some bills will remain at a set amount for the duration of your rent, like your garbage bill, others will increase and decrease based on your usage. Turning off the lights when not needed or when leaving a room will save you money on electricity. Don’t leave your computer or television on constantly and set your thermostat above 70 degrees in warm weather and slightly below that in winter.

Furniture:

Furnishing an apartment is often one of the greatest expenses you’ll encounter, other than rent. Buying furniture from flea markets, garage sales and consignment shops will go a long way towards getting your place furnished at a fraction of the cost of new furniture. You’ll find some amazing deals at these places, as well.

Groceries:

Buying food is expensive. Store brands are usually just as good as name brand items and cost considerably less. Buying in bulk if you have the storage space is also a good way to save some money. Eat your leftovers, rather than throwing them out.

Finding Your Style

Friday, January 04, 2008

Do you like French Country style?  Classical?  Black and white themes?  Haven’t found your particular style yet? Not to worry, there are plenty of resources out there to help you decide what style is for you, what color schemes work best for you or teach you how to design with your own tastes in mind.  Decorating your apartment has never been easier.

French Country- This is a rustic, old-world look, filled with aged natural elements.  Rusted iron, heavy beams and intricate embroidery fill out the French Country style. It evokes the old country, hand crafted and painted woods and a countryside filled with grapes and laughter.

Western Style- Wood and stone, leather and metal are the elements used in Western style.  This doesn’t mean cowboy boots and ten gallon hats.  Rather, natural wood and rough shaped stone mixed with deep leather chairs and metal accents round out this perennial American favorite.

Tuscan Style- Crumbling stone mixed with old world color, wrought iron and hardwood furniture are the hallmarks of this style.  It’s simple, elegant and refined, evoking thoughts of sunny fields in Italy, ancient ruins and comfortable country living.

Traditional Style- This is what many people remember growing up with.  Symmetrical elements and finely carved woods.  This can be somewhat bland to some people, but to many, it is a refreshing orderly haven in the midst of a chaotic world.

There are many more styles to tempt your eye and heart out there.  Whatever you choose, make sure it is a reflection of your personality and desire.

Perry Heights

Thursday, January 03, 2008

The neighborhood of Perry Heights was established in 1922 as a residential area.  It’s hard to imagine an area that offers its residents better access to major thoroughfares without the usually noise and pollution that comes with it.  The neighborhood is set between I-35 and I-45, with easy access to Love Field, the Arts District, impressive medical facilities as well as the entertainment and history hubs of West End and Deep Ellum.

Perry Heights offers a wide variety of architecture to please the eye, as well.  Most of the homes and buildings are from the 1920’s and are well maintained.  You’ll find Colonial Revival mansions standing close by bungalows and Tudors.  The wide variety of housing is a reflection of the different types of people you’ll find here.

Perry Heights, more than its beautiful homes, is known for its trees. Oak, elm and pecan trees spread their branches and leaves across the neighborhood’s roads, offering beauty and shade to the area’s animals and residents.  You’ll find a large variety of animal life in the area, as well; raccoons, squirrels, rabbits and more, hiding away behind cascades of ivy and ferns.

Perry Heights offers residents an incredible experience: quiet family life in the heart of downtown Dallas.  The rich and varied life of the Arts District is just a few blocks from Perry Heights secluded homes, offering residents as much culture and fun as they can handle.  West End offers historical buildings and more nightlife, while Deep Ellum’s proximity provides the residents of the area with unparalled access to fantastic musical performances.
