Getting to know the best in Dallas Sports

Saturday, March 06, 2010

Cities in the southern part of the United States tend to have a bad reputation when it comes to being sports fans. Since so many residents of cities like Miami, Atlanta, and even Dallas come from up north, arenas and stadiums are sometimes full of fans cheering for the away team instead of teams based in Dallas. If you aren’t familiar with the successful major sports clubs in Dallas, let’s take a closer look at who is who.

The best known team in Dallas, and one of the best known teams in the world, is the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys. Winners of multiple Super Bowls, the Cowboys are almost always playoff or even Super Bowl contenders and with a brand new, one billion dollar stadium opening up in 2009, they are not only the marquee team in town but they a top sports franchise any way you want to look at it.

While the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks can’t claim the same number of championships that the Cowboys have, they actually don’t have any, they are also very competitive each and every year thanks to the backing of Internet billionaire owner Mark Cuban. With Cuban’s financial muscle and a good front office, the Mavs made it to NBA finals for the first time in 2006.

Formerly owned by President George W. Bush, the Texas Rangers baseball team has had even less luck than the Mavs, although with a promising young nucleus and some of the best hitters in baseball, the future looks bright for this Arlington based franchise.

Finally, the Dallas apartments Stars moved from Minneapolis and almost immediately brought a Stanley Cup championship to the Metroplex. They almost always make the playoffs and most fans agree that no in-person arena sport matches the excitement of a good old hockey game.

Getting the money for past due utility bills from absent roommate

Saturday, March 06, 2010

One of the most frustrating parts of living in apartment with roommate is collecting rent and utility bills, especially if that person doesn’t pay them on time. However, if your roommate happens to have a job or an emergency that means that they will be away from home for an extended period of time, it can put you in a tough position. Here are a few things you can do if you live with a roommate that is never around.

First, sit down with your roommate and go over how bill collecting is going to be done. If you are the one who writes the checks or pays the bills over the Internet, you are going to need to collect cash or a check from your roommate. If he or she has a job that keeps them out of town, you can predict when they will be gone and you can make an extra effort to collect rent, cable, water, electricity and other bills before they go.

A bigger problem comes up when your roommate suddenly leaves with little to no notice due to a family emergency. If someone has just undergone a family tragedy, it can seem a bit rude to ask them for money before they leave, but if you can’t pay the bills yourself, you are going to have to, or, at the very least, you can contact them later and have them mail you a payment. It isn’t the best system, but it beats living in an apartment with no water or power until they get back.

One other solution is for your roommate to write you post dated checks that can’t be cashed or deposited until the date that is written on the check. This allows you to pay the bills you need to on time but doesn’t allow anyone to take advantage of anyone else.

Finding the lowest rent apartment in the Dallas area

Saturday, March 06, 2010

Over the past two years, a seismic shift in the way that people live is occurring. With gas prices at levels never before seen, the suburbs are being abandoned as people rush back into city centers to cut down on commuting times. This has caused a huge spike in rent prices in most downtown metropolitan areas, so the search for cheaper rent is now more important than ever. Let’s look at some of the various places where you might be able to find cheaper rent in the Dallas metro area.

Although fewer and fewer people every year are using the newspaper to find a place to live, it is still the primary source for apartment listings. The chances of finding a discounted place there are all but impossible, so you may have to look in less conventional spots. Try the local community center in the neighborhood in which you want to live. There will likely be a bulletin board for people looking for roommates or for apartment listings. You have an excellent chance of finding a more affordable place than you would find in the paper, but you are going to have to check on a daily basis because these bargains won’t stick around.

You can also check out alternate newspapers in the Dallas area, other than the popular Morning News. These want ads are usually free, unlike traditional want ads, and can be taken out and canceled with no notice.  You may have to wade through a bunch of ads that don’t really apply to you, but you may find a nugget that suits your needs perfectly.

Finally, free online want ads, like the ones on Craigslist, are a great resource, as well. These ads can be placed in mere minutes and some apartment bargains are filled in seconds. You may have to “stalk” the listings, but you may end up with the deal of the century.

Finding the best Wi-Fi spots in Dallas

Saturday, March 06, 2010

There is no doubt that more and more people are dumping their cumbersome desktop computers and making the switch to laptops, but some folks are balking at the cost of wireless Internet. That’s why it is always important for people to know where their cities wireless internet hot spots are, especially the free ones! Let’s take a look at who is allowing Dallas residents to get on the Information Superhighway for free.

If you enjoy reading, a trip to Barnes & Nobel is almost like going to Disney World. It doesn’t matter if you enjoy light magazine reading or if you are looking for a copy of Crime & Punishment, Barnes & Nobel has it all, and it also has free wireless Internet in all of their Dallas apartment area stores. Since B & N often provides comfy chairs and tables, as well as coffee and snacks, some folks make it an afternoon by heading out to their local bookstore for a snack and some web browsing.

If you are heading into or out of Dallas and or if you are there to pick someone up and their flight is delayed, don’t sweat it, simply grab your laptop and kill some time since all of Dallas-Fort Worth’s International Airport has free Wi-Fi. When you consider how overpriced everything else is at the airport, it is good to know you can get at least one thing for free there. You might want to stay away from the overpriced fast food and magazines, however.

If you are on the road and you need a quick bite to eat, almost all Dallas area McDonalds restaurants have free wireless Internet. In most cases, you can go through the drive-thru or get your order to go and then sit outside and use the Internet in your car. It isn’t the most convenient option, but any port in a storm will do.

Finding a place for your garage band to practice when you live in an apartment

Saturday, March 06, 2010

It seems that everyone wants to be a rock star these days, but if you live in an apartment, simply practicing alone can cause complaints to rain down on you like confetti. If you are an aspiring musician and you are looking for a practice space in the big, beautiful city of Dallas, there are a few places that will allow you to practice for a fairly low price.

Assuming it isn’t located in a residential neighborhood, one popular practice facility is in a self-storage space. Since there isn’t going to be anyone around expect a security guard or two or maybe one or two people getting stuff from their storage locker, you have all the peace and quiet you need to jam out at top volume. Best of all, most storage places only charge $30-$50 a month, and you can keep your equipment there when you aren’t jamming.

If you can schedule your practices in the morning or early afternoon, some bars and clubs will let you use their space before they open to the public. This can be a little expensive since you are using a professional space, but for many bands who have no other alternative, it can be a convenient located spot everyone can meet at on a Saturday morning.

If you are a garage band, maybe you can jam out in someone’s garage! Assuming not all of you live in apartments, one member of the band may likely have a local garage or rehearsal space that the band could use two or three times a month without any problem. If that option isn’t available, check the local weekly music newspapers and see what rehearsal spaces are listed. There are usually want ads in the back that list spaces, sizes and prices for bands looking for a place to jam.

Enjoying your Dallas Staycation

Saturday, March 06, 2010

With gas prices at or near all time highs, more and more people are looking at staycations, or vacations at home, instead of going away this year. The challenge that many people have is finding enough to do in your own home town to keep you busy during your time away from work. Here are a few easy tips for transforming your apartment from every day dull to staycation wonderful.

Try to plan your staycation around a particular event, say a favorite sporting event or an event you can attend in person. That way, you have a build up to your time away from work and a sort of grand finale to look forward to. This will give your time away from work a bit more meaning and it will help make it feel special.

Don’t be afraid to move around some furniture and relax. After all, this is your only staycation of the year, so why not pull up the blinds, clean those windows, move the sofa out of the way and get a tan, right in your own living room. Your home can truly be your palace if you want it to be, so don’t let convention get in your way.

Pick a night, or two, or three, to pamper yourself. Make your favorite meal with all of your favorite fixings and throw yourself a little one person party. If your idea of pampering includes bubble bath, candles and soft music, go all out and set up everything the way you always wanted to. Just because you are staying home this vacation, it doesn’t mean you can’t do something extraordinary during your time off.

Dallas is a city full of beautiful hotels, so why not pick the nicest one you can afford and stay for one night? This gives you a chance to pack a suitcase and get out of the house for a night. Take advantage of all of the hotel amenities as possible to really give yourself the feeling of being away from home.

Dallas area Theft Prevention Tips

Saturday, March 06, 2010

No matter what city you live in, theft is something that is always on our minds. This can be especially true if you are living with a roommate you might not know that well, or if your apartment isn’t in the best part of Dallas. Let’s take a look at a few common sense tips you can keep in mind to reduce the chances of getting robbed.

The easiest place for a robber to break into is your car, and fewer and fewer car insurance companies are covering losses that occur during car break-ins. If you have a CD player in your car, try to keep it in a locked truck and out of the view of a passer by. Never leave luggage or bags visible in your car at any time, especially overnight. If you have covered and lit parking, always park there, otherwise, be careful coming and going from your vehicle during the night.

Perhaps the biggest threat that most apartment folks face is theft from your roommate or your roommate’s friends. The best course of action is to make sure you don’t leave any temptations lying around that could lead to any possible thefts. Never leave your wallet or any cash around in the public areas of your unit and when your mail comes, make sure you take it into a private area to read it so that you don’t have credit card numbers or bank account numbers out in the open that someone could see. If you suspect that your roommate has stolen from you, you should try to gather some iron clad evidence before you confront him or her, and have a witness there to back up what happens. Situations like this can turn ugly fast, so don’t go in unprepared. Theft is not something any of us ever want to have happen, but if it is going on under our noses, we have to take steps to end it right away.

Dallas area dog parks

Saturday, March 06, 2010

They say that everything is bigger in Texas, and that means that more people here own dogs than cats. The huge number of dog owners in Texas demand places all around town in which they can walk and run their dogs, which explains why there are so many quality dog parks in the Dallas apartments metro area. Let’s take a look at some of the best ones, and keep an eye out, there are always new ones opening every few months around the city.

Near Good Latimer Expressway and Commerce Street, you will find the beautiful Bark Park dog park. This is a fenced in dog park perfect for running, playing and all around dog gone fun. There are dog water fountains and plenty of room to run around and play. The Bark Park has been such a hit, it is being used a model for dog parks all over the Dallas metro area.

Near beautiful White Rock Lake lies the Dallas Dog Park, a full acre of land dedicated solely to our favorite four legged friends. This park is run by the city and is often in wonderful shape, although it can get a little crowded on busy summer weekends. The best time to visit this popular dog park is early in the morning or late in the evening if you want to ensure that your pooch has the right to roam as he or she wishes.

On Deep Elm road near the I-75 interchange, you will find the beautiful Deep Elm Dog Park. This is another beautiful Dallas area dog park that has expansive room for your dog to get the exercise he or she needs. There are trashcans and baggies provided to take care of your dog’s business and there are also water fountains provided to ensure that your dog doesn’t go home thirsty.

Choosing between Satellite or cable in Dallas

Saturday, March 06, 2010

Since satellite television has become just as affordable as digital cable, there has been a real battle raging in the living rooms of Dallas residents. Both options have their benefits and drawbacks, and living in an apartment can even influence which one you choose. Let’s take a look at some questions you might need to answer before you choose between satellite television or cable television.

When it comes right down to it, most people choose the option that gives them the most programming for less. Some football fans automatically choose the dish thanks to the face that the popular NFL Sunday Ticket package that allows viewers to watch every regular season football game is only available on the dish. At the same time, digital cable sometimes offers On Demand services that are only on cable and not on the dish. Once you and your roommate sit down and decide what is most important to you in the way of available programming, your decision should be pretty clear.

If your programming choices are basically even, you should look at incentives offer by both your dish company and your cable company. Just like apartment complexes, they can offer one free month of programming or other such freebees that can tip the scale one way or the other. You might have to sit down with a calculator and figure it all out, but in the end, the savings could be more than worth it.

Unfortunately, due to the direction some apartments face and the restrictions that some management companies place on their properties, you may not have the same choices that those who live in houses do. Before you start calling cable and dish companies, check to see which one you can legally have in your apartment. You may find out that your decision has already been made.
